With energy costs recently skyrocketing, it is crucial for all homeowners to be aware of how to get the most out of their heating and air conditioning systems. No matter if you use central air conditioning or individual units, oil, or gas heat, these essential utilities can be very pricey if you do not do correct upkeep on them. In addition, depending on where you live, you may have to use them for many months of the year.

In the this article we will be giving homeowners a number of valuable tips on how to get the most out of their heating and air conditioning systems.

Hint 1 – No matter if, you are thinking about hot or cold air, you must make certain that you constantly have adequate airflow. The top reason why airways are blocked is dirty air filters. This is why it is important that you inspect your filters at least once a month. If you see that they are worn or dirty, and then just go to a hardware store and purchase new replacement filters. This easy hint can save you hundreds per year in energy costs.

Tip 2 – The next thing to check is your evaporator and condenser coils. This may sound very technical to you, however it is easy to ask a professional how to check and perform upkeep on them while they are being installed. It is important to check on the evaporator because it may become blocked up, which will make your system work more than it usually would.

This will eventually raise your utility rates and make your system wear down quicker than it should. If you can manage it, you can always clean your condensing coils by running them under the hose. Make sure you handle them gently and do not use a strong stream of water. The fins in the condensing coils are fragile and if they are damaged you will have to buy new coils, and they are costly.

As well, you can clean your evaporator coil with some dish soap and warm water. You can use an old toothbrush to clean the insides but be cautious as to not damage the fins.

Tip 3 – Fallen insulation and crumbled or damaged duct lines will affect the temperature in your home. If you find either of these issues, then you must contact your service company to come and replace them for you. Do not go crawling around your attic trying to find the issue yourself unless you have a lot of experience dealing with insulation or duct repair.

Hint 4 – Finally, it is a great idea to buy a service agreement from your local service firm. These agreements are usually cost efficient and will provide you with a trained professional that will come to your house and check your system two times a year and will do any maintenance repairs and do all the necessary cleanings on all your filters and coils.

Do your due diligence to see which company gives the most ideal service agreements, as they will vary in cost and features. Same as having our automobiles serviced, having the heating and cooling systems in our homes serviced is a way to prevent problems from happening and a great investment that will save you significant amount money per year in energy fees.

The Vail Ski Condo(s) And My History Lesson

I had a chance to visit Vail, Colorado recently. My buddy who lives in Denver owns a ski condo(s) in Vail. He had to drive up to meet with his new tenants to sign the lease. I tagged along. We got there on a Saturday morning and he let me use his car to drive around as he waited to meet with his new tenants.

It was great driving around in this area. It was springtime and all the trees and foliage was in bloom. I would simply pull off the road whenever I saw a place I wanted to take a hike. I saw up ahead as I was looking for my next hike a large wooden sign. As I came closer I saw a large monument. I parked and walked up to the sign. It read that it was dedicated to the U. S. Army division tenth mountain division formed in’40.

I later learned that the division was formed because the U. S. Infantry was not equipped to do battle in cold climates like Finland and Norway. And if the U. S. Had to fight in the Swiss Alps there was no fighting force available for the battle. The formation at the time was simply called ski troops. Some men volunteered for the force because it sounded like a glamorous idea.

This was camp hale that I had stepped into. I do not know what its relationship was to the town of Vale. The troops that arrived at camp hale were amazed. They did not know that such mountains existed. And the ones who were used to skiing were impressed with the equipment they trained with. Some said these were the finest skis and bindings they had ever seen. The bindings could be dangerous though.

This training was more dangerous than recreational type skiing. They each carried a fifty pound pack. If they fell the wrong way they could break their leg because the bindings were bear trap that did not come off.

The troops lived in the mountains for weeks working in altitudes up to thirteen thousand five hundred feet. And some nights the temperature fell to twenty degrees below zero. You had to know what you were doing or you would be dead. The younger troops relied on the older men, the experienced mountain men. The older troops told the younger ones to rub their exposed extremities with bacon grease. This helped prevent frostbite.

In Germany the tenth division finally saw combat. It fought in the mountains of Italy the German army in’45. This was a key battle for the U. S. Because the German army had a high strategic position that was preventing the infantry from moving forward. The Germans were surprised by the mountain division because they believed their position was so high and unattainable that they were beyond attack. But the mountain division surprised them and was able to remove them from their strategic foothold.

It was sobering to stand in the area where the mountain division trained. This division had one of the highest rate of casualties of any U. S. Division. Here brave soldiers practiced survival methods in the snowy mountaintops of world war two. I drove back to my friend’s ski condo with a lot more appreciation for the brave men of the tenth division.

A private owner we be more likely to negotiate prices with you if you find one you like but can’t afford. You also have many resorts and hotels you can choose from no matter where you take your skiing trip.

The prices on these accommodations can vary drastically. As with any hotel the price will depend on how nice the place is and what amenities they offer. When visiting a ski resort on vacation you may end up paying more than at a regular resort or hotel.

This is because of the convenience of the location. You can simply walk out of the resort and head straight to the lifts to start your skiing. The amount of snow and the height of the mountains will depend on where you go for vacation. Some places have smaller mountains that are easier to ski on while others have very large mountains.

Depending on which ski resort you visit you will have different runs available. The hotel should be able to tell you what type of run is accessible from them. There are runs that are easy for first timers and children while other runs are for the more advanced skier. You also need to determine how many people are going on the trip with you before you can decide where to stay. A couple traveling alone would have a great time at a resort or hotel.

However if you have a large number of people taking this vacation you may want to consider renting a cabin on the mountain. Resorts may be expensive but they are very luxurious. This is great for a couple on vacation alone. Although a cabin will offer more privacy from the outside world.

The last decision for you to make is if you want to rent or buy your skis. First timers should usually stick to renting. Make sure to buy damage insurance plans for any rented equipment. Winterize Your Home with 10 Important Steps

With winter just around the corner, you need to make sure you’re ready for those chilly temperatures. Before winter actually gets here, take a little time and make sure your home is properly with her wise. If you do this, you’ll not only control your heating and energy costs, but you may also prevent cold-weather problems like frozen pipes or other disastrous situations. Even better, these things are going to make your home very comfortable even if it’s showing subzero temperatures outside.

1. Check the insulation level in your ceiling and attic. Be sure you have adequate insulation in your home so cold air isn’t escaping through your roof and increasing your energy bills. The U.S. Department of Energy offers guidelines for the R-value you should have in your home based on where you are located in the country and the expected low temperatures there in the winter season. Simply type in “R value insulation” in any search engine and you’ll be able to find this chart or a similar chart on an insulation manufacturer’s website. Add any necessary insulation now so that your home is well insulated before the first cold spell hits.

2. Caulking is important, especially around gaps, cracks, or other spaces that are going to allow heat to get out and cold to get in. Areas to look at include around windows and doors, around the foundation, or in a porch area, for example. Seal things tight with caulking so that the heat stays indoors and doesn’t get out. In addition, you can seal your windows with plastic so that air won’t leak out and cold drafts won’t get in, during winter.

3. If you put weather stripping around your windows and doors, you can seal gaps even if you can’t caulk them.

4. Turn off any outside water faucets and drain them to prevent outside faucets and pipes from freezing and cracking or bursting.

5. If you live in a mobile home or you have a crawl space underneath your house, go underneath to make sure that the pipes under your house are well insulated so that they won’t freeze during the winter.

6. Install ceiling fans in your home and plan to run them on the low setting during the winter months. Ceiling fans can help re-circulate warm air down from the ceilings to where it will be better appreciated in the room.

7. Get your furnace serviced to ensure it is working properly and will not leak carbon monoxide into your home. Change the filter, too-and plan to change it no less than every three months, more frequently if you have pets or if it is dirty when you check it periodically.

8. If you have window air-conditioning units in your home, take them out and store them properly. The windows themselves should be closed up and sealed to make sure that warm air won’t leak out and cold air won’t get in. If you have central air conditioning, cover the unit so that moisture stays out during off-season.

9. If you have old-fashioned windows that utilize screens, remove and replace them with storm windows and doors for the winter.

10. Plants should be trimmed back and trees should be pruned as necessary. If bulbs need to be dug up, do so, and cover shrubs and fragile plants with an old sheet or blanket and a plastic container like an inverted garbage can.

It takes some time, to be sure, but if you properly prepare your house for the winter, you’ll have both energy savings and be more comfortable, too.
